What I do

Existential therapy

Hi, I’m Suzanne, an existential psychotherapist working and living in London.

No-one knows your world as well as you do.  However, sometimes, that world can be difficult to understand.  Perhaps your world changed recently and you’re struggling to make sense of things now. Maybe you feel low or anxious and aren’t sure why. Talking things through with someone can help.

I offer you a safe, confidential space in which to explore your world, enabling you to confront challenges and understand relationships and personal boundaries.  You can see how things could be different and what is within your power to change.  My approach involves following a particular method of inquiry to help you do this. I’ll be alongside you, paying close attention to how you express things, through words, gestures and emotions, noticing also how these things feel in the space between us.  I won’t direct you towards a particular course of action.  Instead, I’ll bring encouragement, challenge and support in a place that exists just for you.

What it’s like to work with me

This has helped me with the mental toll of having a chronic illness. Having a safe space to share my experiences, and to be listened to, has been incredibly beneficial. I have learnt a lot about myself in the process, and perhaps most importantly to be kinder to myself. Our work together has helped make me feel much better equipped to navigate my continuing physical health challenges.”

FAQs

What is existential psychotherapy?

An existential therapist encourages their client to describe and explore their world. This helps them understand ‘reality’ more clearly. Potential choices and boundaries are explored; issues are confronted. When client and therapist share a spirit of curiosity, it becomes possible to see things differently.

Sometimes, it can feel like we have no control over our lives. In reconnecting with reality, we challenge self-limiting beliefs and become more aware of our opportunities.

An important aspect of existential therapy is to embrace a degree of anxiety within our lives. Without anxiety, we would never know when something’s wrong. If we can engage with and understand personal anxiety, we can find new, more fulfilling ways to live in spite of it.

What commitment is required?

A commitment to exisistential therapy requires regular attendance to sessions and openness to self-reflection, change and acceptance. A readiness to enter into dialogue with another person will bring opportunities to see how you engage with others.

What about the cost?

Contact me to find out my current rates; I offer a couple of low-rate sessions per week.  Although I charge for missed sessions, I will try to find another session time within the same week where possible.  I offer daytime and evening sessions.

How do I start the process?

Simply reach out to me via my ‘Contact’ page. I’ll schedule an initial consultation to get to know you, answer any questions, and determine next steps.

Who can benefit from existential therapy?

Anyone seeking personal or professional growth can benefit from our work, however a readiness to take personal responsibility and work hard is required. The client is the ‘expert’ in their life; the therapist is there to guide them as they try to make sense of it.
